For your invitation, you can
craft a card with the
following on it:

Bee
There: (date)
Fly on over to: (location or address)
Infestation Time: (time party starts)
Buzzzzz ME: RSVP by ( date & phone number)
Take a bee-line through the woods with
nature and identify various insects. Whether it's a birthday or
end-of-summer gathering this party will be a Happy Bee-Day!
To start this party you can decorate
bug boxes or containers, make antennae boppers from foam balls that
extend on coiled wire from hairbands, make giant wings from poster board
that can be tied or tape to their backs or make paper chain
caterpillars. My favorite is yarn bugs, their
easy to make and kids love them (see yarn bugs below).
For activities, you can go on a nature
walk and identify insects and maybe capture a few to view more closely
(of course you will let them go later). Play games like pin the
spider on the web, Swat a Fly ( Fly swat balloon race), Bug Hunt (search
for hidden plastic bugs), water bugs (water balloon toss), swat a bug
piñata and Buzz, Buzz, Sting ( a version of Duck, Duck, Goose).
Have a story time featuring a great book like "The Very Hungry
Caterpillar" or "The Very Quiet Cricket". Don't forget to put on
some cool bug tattoo's.

For a more dainty bug
party go with the

Choose your
favorite bug colors and use our solid color partyware.

Lightning Bugs - Yellow
Green
Bees-
Black

Grasshoppers - Green
Brown
Use one color for you tablecover and
utensils, and the other for your
plate and napkins. For example for a lady
bug theme, use red for your table cover and black for the plates. They
will look like the dots on the back of the ladybug. |

Set your party up in your backyard or a
local park. Set up a bug walk, where you will identify natural bugs you
see as well as some special bugs (plastic, stuff animals) that have been
carefully placed along the path. Tie balloons to your deck, on
sticks along your path or use a balloon bunch w/weight for a table
centerpiece. Make a spider web between trees and add some plastic
spiders. |
Transform a room into an outside bug
paradise using scene setters. Add balloons, stuffed or
plastic bugs throughout the room. Some of your stuffed bugs could serve
as balloon weights.

Dangling Spiders

Rope Spider Web with Spider

Add spider webs in corner.
Capture some real bugs the morning of
your party and place in a clear jars with air-holes or bug catcher
containers. Make sure to let them go after the party or have your guest
help you. |

Pin the Spider
on the Web
Draw a giant spider web on poster board,
with a small hole center outlined in red. Create mini spiders
using small black pompoms or cut out small black paper spiders. Add
double stick tape to the back.
Play like Pin the Tail. |
Swat the Fly
Using plastic fly swatters and small 5"
black balloons decorated to look like a fly, have a "swat the fly" race.
Divide guest into teams. Each team member must swat a fly to a
turnaround point and back to the start line. Each team member gets a
turn. The first team to have all team members swat
their flies, wins. |
Bug Hunt
Set up adventure for guests to search for
pre-hidden plastic bugs in the yard or around the party room. |
|
There's a Bug
On My Back
Place a bug sticker on each guest's back.
They have to guess what bug they are by asking yes/no questions to the
other children. For example, "Do I fly?", "Do I crawl?", "Do I have
wings?", "Do I Sting?", and so on. |
Buzz, Buzz, Sting
Play this fun game just like the old time
favorite Duck, Duck, Goose.
|
Grasshopper Race
Simply set up a hopping race. You can do
it individually or set up teams.

Yarn Bug s
I have made these for many parties in
different forms. You can have them pre-made and then have the kids add
decorations, arms, feet, antennas, etc. Click
here for some basic yarn bug
instructions and other bug ideas. Use different color yarn to create
different kinds of bugs. For ladybugs, use red, glue on black foam
circles, eyes, antennas. For bees, use a mix of black and yellow yarn,
add wings, antennas and eyes. You can be as creative as you like with
colors and bugs. Below I show you a sample craft table setup from
a party that I did. The theme was Crazy Eights but it gives you an idea
how to set up a table. I used little nut cups to pour glue in and gave
them q-tips to apply. You can use foam, pom poms, sequence, pipe
cleaners and other craft decorations. Also I included a photo of
the finished yarn bugs. Click on photos to enlarge.

Make fun bug snacks like:
1. Ants on a Log - Quartered celery
sticks filled with peanut butter and topped with several
raisins.
2. Butterfly Cracker - Oblong Ritz
Cracker, spread with cream cheese, peanut butter or
cheese spread. Add raisins for the
body and two mini pretzels for the wings.
3. Oreo® Spiders - Ingredients: 1 Oreo®
cookie 6 inches of black licorice string (thin and
cut into four 4-inch pieces), White
decorating icing ( fine tip), two cinnamon perils
Directions: Open up the cookie
without breaking the top or bottom halves. Lay four pieces
of black string across the
white-crème filling. Put the cookie back together. Place two tiny
dabs of white icing on the cookie.
Place a cinnamon candy on top of each dab for eyes.
Instead of cake make bug cupcakes. Here
