Should
we have a House Warming Party or Open House?
I have been asked what
is the difference between an "Open House" and a "House Warming
Party".
An "Open House" is usually more of a social gathering of friends, people drop by within designated
hours, guests may stay as
little as a half-hour or longer, no gifts are expected but some guest may
bring
a bottle of their favorite spirits to share, and you may find more of these
parties around
Christmas or New Year's. A "House Warming" is exactly what it sounds like, it's a way for friends,
family, new neighbors to
wish you a warm welcome to your new home. Most guest will
bring a gift for your new home.
Origins of Housewarming
According to other sources, housewarming
has a Scottish descent. The word "huswermynge" is
first mentioned in an English monastic record from about 1150. It
simply meant "heating a house". It's been said that
embers from the
fireplace of an old home were carried to start the fire in a new house.
It has also been told that after 1577 it
came to be used metaphorically. A family in London having build a
new home, made a royal feast for their friends, which they call their
house warming".
Who
throws a house warming party?
A friend, family members, even yourself. Yes, I have checked
out
the current etiquette of throwing your own House Warming Party and it is okay to do!
Register?
No, according to an etiquette professional. Though there has been a
trend to do so over the past few years, it not considered proper
etiquette.
When
do you have a house warming party?
As soon as the new homeowners are ready!
Some people have had them up to 4-6 months after they
have moved in. It all depends how fast the homeowner gets unpacked and feels
comfortable enough
to have guest come over.
Do
we have a theme party or not?
Themes make party planning and gift giving easier. I have listed
some
of my
favorite themes below.
